But I See Beauty and Wonder…

Spazju Kreattiv: Space A, B, Atrium, Atrium approach

The projection is an interactive work, where the visitor can change the narrative using an infrared laser to track a dot of light on the screen, triggering animations based on the light’s position.

The scene is set in a dark, almost eerie city suburb where distant, shadowy figures blend into the decay. As the light gradually illuminates the space, these once-undefined elements reveal beauty and simplicity, transforming perceptions of often-stigmatized suburbs. The light symbolizes the work of artists striving to elevate these areas, while the initial darkness represents the challenges these communities face, frequently the only side outsiders see.

The installation tackles two main themes: Beauty in Sadness: A mural of a crying face is initially somber but becomes vivid with color as light touches it, showing the beauty within sorrow. A woman in front of the mural finds inspiration by connecting with it. The Fragility of Living: Highlights the precariousness of life for those facing housing crises, contrasting images of bleak, unstable environments with visions of secure homes symbolizing dignity and stability.

What happens when the light shines? Imagine starting in a dark, spooky city where everything seems sad and gray. But as a magical light begins to glow, something amazing happens! The gloomy buildings and shadowy people slowly change, bursting with color and beauty, showing us that even places that seem scary can be full of surprises. The light is like an artist’s brush, making everything better. At first, we only see the tough side of this city—the parts that are falling apart or forgotten. But once the light shines, we discover hidden stories and the beauty waiting to be found. Get Ready to Play!: The coolest part? You get to control the light! Using a special infrared torch, you can point to different parts of the city, and wherever the light touches, the story changes. You’ll see colorful animations pop up, bringing the dark, gray world to life. It’s like being the artist of the whole city!
